Document Library

This is a repository of missile documents (mostly regarding Titan I, but will include other weapon systems) that I have carefully scanned in an effort to not only preserve them, but also to provide an online research library to missile historians and anyone else with an interest in the history of US missile defense.

Many of the documents are from my own collection, but invaluable contributions have been made by Mr. F. Epler, Mark S. Edson and others to whom I owe enormous gratitude for entrusting me with their valuable resources.

The impetus for this library is the freedom and preservation of information.  Much of what you find here will not be generally available and offers information not easily found in the public domain.  It is my most sincere hope that the resources provided here will be of great value and interest to anyone writing on the subject of missile history, or simply having a passing fancy on the legacies of the Cold War and its earth-shattering technological developments.

The documents presented here represent years of time, effort and much expense to collect, compile, restore, scan and format to make available.  I hope that the material provided here will be of great value and interest to those who lived the history, those who lived through it, and those who came later and wish to know more.

For now, all documents here will be provided in PDF format, for which you will need either Adobe Reader or a web browser with the appropriate plug-in installed in order to open and view the files.  The software is free and therefore I felt it was a good choice for the sake of availability.  If you need the Reader software, it can be downloaded for free here: Adobe Reader.

In addition, there are other applications capable of opening PDF files if you have a different preference.

The documents are divided into several main categories (click the headings to jump to that category):

  • Blueprints - Blueprints for the operational missiles complexes, including redlines, early drafts, and as-built drawings. These fascinating documents drill down to exactly how the missile sites were constucted. Build your own today!

  • In the news - News articles, clippings and other media publications about the Titan I system from the past as well as recent history.

  • Operational Histories - From construction and labor issues to engineering obstacles and accident statistics.  These documents dig deep into the history of the operational missiles sites.

  • Tech Order Publications - Technical and operational manuals purpose-written for the missile crews about the weapon systems and their equipment and support systems.

More categories will be added as the library expands.

Why are those *@*!!#* watermarks pasted all over the documents?

You will undoubtedly notice the web address plastered all over the documents provided here.  This is not to be evil or a jerk but instead to prevent the abuse of the resources here.  It is all too easy to imagine these freely-available documents showing up for sale on ebay or some other place.  These watermarks provide a measure of deterrent to anyone who might try to turn a profit on unsuspecting folks.  These resources are absolutely not intended for commercial purposes!  Any such use is the absolute antithesis to the notion of this entire site!

For now, all documents here will be thusly marked to prevent such shenanigans.  I have taken care to ensure that the readability of the documents has not suffered from the addition of these watermarks. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Contributions to this Library

In the spirit of the free flow and availability of information, I would like to implore anyone who has historical documents and does not necessarily have the time or tools to scan and preserve them, to contact me about adding them to this library.

This library exists to benefit all and is absolutely NON-PROFIT.  I ask for no money, and I assume all costs associated with its maintenance and the scanning and editing of the documents within.  I would like to encourage anyone with documents of historical interest to preserve them as best they can so they are not lost to time.  To that end, if you have missile-related documents or photos that you would like to see included here, please contact me and see if we can make arrangements to digitize them for inclusion here.  I pledge to treat any materials with the utmost of care and see them safely returned to you--AT NO COST.

Information is of little use when it is stored away where it cannot be accessed.  Vast stores of information on missile history sit in public and private hands-- in company archives, in libraries, in basements and storage units--essentially lost and useless.  How long will it be before it is truly lost to fire, flood or simply thrown away?  My own collection has been largely hidden away for years and though I have been able to use it for research, it has largely served no one; it is time for that to end.

If you have documents and materials relating to missile history, please preserve them digitally.  If you are unable, see if someone else can do it for you.  This library will continue expanding as I complete the documents I have, and hopefully expand further as more become available.

This is an experiment really, but for now, I offer my services as long as I can keep up.  Due credit will be given here if so desired.  My thanks.

*** NOTE: These are high quality scans and the resulting file sizes are LARGE ***

*** I apologize in advance for the inconvenience caused by LONG download times ***

ATC AIR FORCE TIMES SALUTES - PREPARE THE MAN

Air Training Command, Air Force Times - July. 31ST, 1963*

Short article featuring A1C Kenneth E. Brannon.  A1C Brannon tells of his Air Force career and how he came to be an MMT with the 451st SMW at Lowry AFB.  This candid chat brings to life the experience of an airman training for missile duty with the US strategic missile forces.  Many great photos were taken for this article and its a pity so few were used.  This article feels like a friendly chat with airman Brannon and offers great insight into the lives of the crewmembers.
